當前隨著我國研究生教育規模的不斷擴大，專業型碩士和學術型碩士已經成為研究生教學的兩大主體。長期以來，針對學術型研究生的公共英語教學已經比較成熟，教學模式和教材建設也相對穩定。但是，針對專業型碩士研究生公共英語的教學模式和教材建設并沒有一個成型的體系。
專業型碩士研究生的公共英語教學是研究生培養的一個重要組成部分。筆者認為，其教學目標應該具有兩方面：一是培養研究生的國際化視野；二是提升研究生專業學術英語能力。針對目前專業型碩士研究生來源的多元化，一方面要注重提升其跨文化的學術交流能力以及語言知識和語言技能的應用能力，同時還要兼顧培養研究生如何運用外語解決自己專業問題的能力，使外語學習能更好地為研究生的專業學習和研究打好基礎，最終增強其學習和工作的競爭力。
基于以上教學目標和原則，筆者專門組織編寫了這部教材。本教材在內容上充分考慮了各類專業型碩士研究生的需求，選用了工程、管理、教育、金融、人文、科貿等12大類的內容，基本涵蓋了目前的專業型碩士群體。本教材的文章均選自國外原版著作（個別文章稍有小改動，但不影響內容變化），時效陛強，語言難度適中，適合研究生課堂教學和自主學習。
