由我國著名的英語教育家、北京外國語大學原資深教授張漢熙主編的《高級英語》以及張漢熙主編、王立禮編的《高級英語》(修訂本)是我國改革開放后最早出版的大學高年級英語教材，一直深受廣大師生的喜愛，至今仍被廣泛使用，對我國的英語教學產生了深刻影響。該套教材曾先后于1988年和1996年分別獲得國家教委(現教育部)和北京市社科優秀成果獎，并被評為“60年60本最具影響力英語教育出版物”。
為了繼承和發揚原書的優秀品質，進一步提高教科書的質量，外語教學與研究出版社在征集了廣大師生的意見和建議后，現對《高級英語》(修訂本)進行再次修訂。修訂后的版本稱為《高級英語》(第三版)。第三版修訂的重點為：在保持《高級英語》(修訂本)的基礎上適當增加新的課文，用更具時代感的新課文替換原教材的部分課文，并對第一、二冊的課文內容作適當調整，在學生用書中加強了關于作品、作者及作品背景的介紹；加強文章主題整體結構以及寫作風格的分析；調整了練習項目并作了適當修改等。
